Anna Mae Robertson was one of the 855 women who made up the only predominantly Black female postal battalion to serve in War World II. These women processed more than 17 million pieces of mail in three months while stationed in England, breaking all Army records for sorting mail. The women repeated the feat in France,
Robertson received many other awards for her military service. Congresswoman Gwendolyn Moore assisted Robertson in receiving the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Congresswoman Moore was also the primary sponsor of a bill in the House of Representatives to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Robertson and the Women’s Army Corps’ 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.
Mrs. Robertson has lived in Milwaukee since 1946 where she raised a family of eight children and worked as a nursing aid. The 98-year-old attends Tabernacle Community Baptist Church.
