  • Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953, in Chicago. She is the eldest of five children .
  • Chaka Khan formed her first group, the Crystalettes, with her sister Yvonne in 1964.
  • During the late 1960s,Chaka Khan became involved in the civil rights movement. She joined the Black Panther Party after becoming friends with Fred Hampton.
  • Khan received an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 2004.
  • She established the Chaka Khan Foundation, which addresses issues of domestic violence and youth education, in 1999.
  • On May 19, 2011, Chaka Khan was given the 2,440th Hollywood Walk of Fame star plaque.
  • Chaka Khan has won 10 Grammy Awards, including two as a member of Rufus. She has received 22 Grammy Award nominations, including three as a member of Rufus.
