Jay Z, Drake take home honors at BET Hip Hop Awards

Jay Z and Drake were both honored at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards, but Kendrick Lamar was the big winner.

Lamar won five categories, narrowly beating out Drake and Jay Z for the top prizes.

The “Don’t Kill My Vibe” hitmaker, who was nominated 14 times, walked out with five awards, including Lyricist of the Year, MVP of the Year, and Sweet 16, which honors the best featured 16-bar verse on a single track.

Lamar also took home Album of the Year for “good kid, m.A.A.d city,” as well as Best Collaboration for his contribution to A$AP Rocky’s hit song, “Problems.”

Drake scooped four awards – Best Hip-Hop Video, Track of the Year, People’s Champ Award and Best Club Banger, for his featured rhymes on French Montana’s “Pop That.”

Veteran Jay Z added two honors to his collection by winning Best Live Performer and Hustler of the Year.

The ceremony, which aired in the U.S. on Tuesday, but was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, last month, was hosted by Snoop Lion and included performances by Montana, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Lamar, who proved he was worthy of the accolades with an impressive four-minute freestyle rap.
