Entries are being accepted for the 2014 Northwestern Mutual Foundation Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Contest.
Kids ages 5-18 are encouraged to enter a written poem or a spoken word piece based on this Dr. King quote “I am the dream.”
Winners in the spoken word category will present their piece live at the annual Dr. King Breakfast on Monday, January 20. The poetry winners will have their poems displayed in the MLK program and will be recognized at the breakfast.
Poems are due to the YMCA by Tuesday, December 17.

Holiday Lites has returned to Miller Valley at the MillerCoors Brewery for the tenth year. The popular light show is the largest display of its kind in the Midwest with more than 300,000 LED lights synchronized to a spirited mix of holiday music.
The Holiday Lites show takes place each Friday and Saturday during the holiday season from now through Saturday, December 21. Shows run every 20 minutes from 4:40pm-9pm.
While there visitors will receive a free, mini brewery tour which begins at the Visitor Center, 42nd and State. The tour includes the Lite Show, a visit to the one-of-a-kind Historic Miller Caves and beer samples in the historic Milwaukee Brewery stables for those 21 and older.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to Toys-For-Tots or a non-perishable food item for Hunger Task Force. More information can be found here or by calling 414-931-BEER (2337).

Wounded Angels Foundation will host a Christmas celebration for foster children and children with incarcerated parents. The events are FREE and will be held Sunday, December 15 from 2pm-4pm at the Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Avenue, and Saturday, December 21 from 2pm-4pm at the Washington Park Library, 2121 N. Sherman Boulevard.
In addition to prayer, story time, games and entertainment, each child in attendance will receive a gift and Christmas card on the behalf of her or his absent parent. Volunteers and donations of toys and books are still needed.
Families may register at woundedwings.org or by calling (414) 979-9464. Early registration is encouraged to allow the incarcerated or noncustodial parents an opportunity to send a personal message to their child/children. Advance registration is required.

Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative is looking for donations of basic household items like toothpaste, dental floss, dish soap and toilet paper.
Donation bins are set up inside the Milwaukee County Courthouse, Milwaukee City Hall and other facilities across Milwaukee County until Wednesday, December 18.
